Attract the Right Clients: 4 Common Mistakes to Avoid

Most business owners believe the relationship with a future client begins when the phone rings, an email arrives, or someone fills out a contact form. It doesn’t.

Revenue starts before the relationship does.

In fact, research consistently shows that 50–70% of the B2B buying decision is made before a prospect ever speaks with a salesperson. And for B2C, it increases to 90%! By the time someone reaches out, they’ve already been evaluating your company through your website, your LinkedIn presence, your online content, referrals, reviews, and the overall experience you create before they ever say hello.

The question to ask about your marketing isn’t, “How do I get more leads?”

The better question is: “What is my future client learning about my business before we ever meet?”

It is about attracting the right clients and inviting them to take the next step to engage with you. This is the first of five opportunities to grow your revenue. ATTRACT.

How do you know if you are attracting them? By making sure you don’t make these 4 mistakes:

Mistake #1: Treating Your Website Like a Digital Brochure

Too many organizations treat their website like an online brochure, a place to list services, company history, and a few photos. Your website has a much bigger job.

It should answer the questions every prospect is asking:

  • Can you solve my problem?
  • Have you done this before?
  • Can I trust you?
  • Do I understand what you do?
  • Why should I choose you instead of someone else?

If your website leaves visitors with more questions than confidence, they’re likely moving on before you ever knew they were there.

Mistake #2: Using AI as Your Marketing Department

Artificial Intelligence has become an incredible tool for creating content, brainstorming ideas, and overcoming writer’s block. But here’s where many businesses get into trouble. They let AI become the author instead of the assistant. Use AI to help you write… not to write everything for you.

The strongest content starts with your experience, your perspective, your client stories, and your expertise. AI can help organize those thoughts, improve clarity, and speed up the process, but it can’t replace your authentic voice.

Before publishing anything, ask yourself:

  • Does this sound like me?
  • Is it accurate?
  • Does it reflect how I work with clients?

Because authenticity always wins.

Mistake #3: Make Your Marketing About You

One of the biggest mistakes is that companies talk almost exclusively about themselves.

  • “We’ve been in business for 30 years.”
  • “We’re award-winning.”
  • “Our team has decades of experience.”

Those things matter… eventually. But first, your prospect wants to know one thing: Can you solve my problem?

Lead with the outcomes you create. Show people what life looks like after working with you. Help them picture success before they ever contact you. Your credentials become far more valuable once your prospect already believes you’re the right fit.

#RebelMindset: It’s your story, but it’s your customer’s journey.

Mistake #4: Marketing Ends with the Marketing Department

Imagine a prospect visits your website and loves what they see. They fill out your contact form. Then they receive a phone call that feels completely disconnected from everything they just experienced online. Different messaging, language, expectations… that disconnect creates doubt.

Every person who interacts with a customer is part of your marketing, whether their title includes the word “marketing” or not. Your receptionist, customer service team, salespeople, project managers, technicians, and leadership team should all understand the promises your marketing is making.

Because consistency builds trust. And trust builds revenue.

Before the First Hello

Businesses that grow consistently are the ones that intentionally build trust before asking someone to become a customer. If you’re wondering where to begin, don’t start by buying more marketing. Start by understanding what your future clients experience before they ever reach out.
